Landlocked Records
314 South Washington St. Monday - Saturday 11:30 a.m. - 7:30 p.m. Sunday Noon - 5 p.m.
Off of the intersection of Third and Washington, Landlocked Records creates a comfy at-home feeling while you browse through stacks of records and vinyls. The posters covering the walls give the store a Blockbuster feeling of sorts, while the chairs and listening station up front resemble the coziness of a coffee shop. It’s the music version of its bookstore neighbor that invites you to just kick back and listen to records for hours. A regular haven for Bloomington music lovers, booking managers and indie kids, Landlocked has been welcomed quickly into the local scene. – Drew Anderson
TD’s CDs and LPs
322 E Kirkwood Ave .# 21 Monday - Saturday Noon - 7 p.m. Sunday Noon - 5 p.m.
Its basement entrance might be tricky, but TD’s has its own special home in Bloomington located beside Soma Coffeeshop from Kirkwood and Grant. The shop’s cellar feel doesn’t hinder anyone who needs to get the indie and punk rock fix they crave, with a selection ranging from classic artists to up-and-coming buzz bands. And in case you need a break from all that great music, just crossover to Soma for a cup of joe. – Drew Anderson
Boxcar Books
310A S. Washington St. Monday - Friday: 11 a.m. - 9 p.m. Saturday 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. Sunday Noon - 5 p.m.
Right next to Landlocked Records, Boxcar is Bloomington’s all-volunteer non-profit bookstore and provides a nice local contrast to the chain stores. Filled with tons of used books, fanzines, comic books and periodicals, Boxcar’s collection represents a fair profile of the wide variety of Bloomingtonites who frequent it. A strong proponent of literacy efforts, Boxcar is a community bookstore in a bigger way than simply as a retail establishment. The bookstore was born out of The Midwest Pages to Prisoners Project and continues in its mission to provide a bookstore that gives back to Bloomington. – Peter Chen
