New Pioneer Co-op
22 S. Van Buren St. 7 a.m. - 11 p.m., every day
Founded in 1971, the New Pioneer Co-op prides itself on being the social conscious of Iowa City grocery shoppers. The store provides miles to market stickers on all its fresh produce and buys locally as often as possible. It also tracks over-farming and endangered meat and fish products, pulling the items out of the store when the animal becomes threatened. The aisles are filled with a wide variety a vegan, non-dairy and gluten-free products, perfect for any socially or health-conscious eater. Emphasizing the community-based operation, members can buy a share in the business, which gives them a lifetime five-percent discount and the ability to have a say in the store’s financial decisions. The Co-op also offers cooking classes and other community events.
The Mill
120 E Burlington St.
The Mill, established in 1962, is an Iowa City classic. Although its brown brick exterior and dark, wooded interior may not look like anything special, the venue offers an unpretentious place to enjoy dinner, drinks and pool, as well as a few surprises: the menu includes bar regulars like pizza and wings alongside black-bean burgers and chicken marsala, and the back room offers music and literary readings as varied as the beer list nearly every night. -- Daily Iowan Arts Staff
