Spring Sing
The annual Spring Sing Talent Show is UCLA’s oldest musical traditions, dating back to the 1940s, and is one of the most-anticipated events on campus. Each year Spring Sing attracts over 5,000 audience members as the Student Alumni Association organizes a celebrity panel of judges and student talent acts, and presents the annual George and Ira Gershwin Award for Lifetime Musical Achievement (GIGA). Past GIGA winners include Quincy Jones, Stevie Wonder, Ella Fitzgerald, James Taylor and Babyface. This year, UCLA will be honoring Academy Award and Grammy winner singer-producer Lionel Ritchie.
Spring Sing boasts past performers like Maroon 5 and Sara Bareilles. Solo, duet, and group talent acts including some from fraternities and sororities, as well as a cappella groups compete, and non-judged exhibition dancers like Samahang Modern also take the stage. In addition to entertaining between acts, a group of students called “Company” perform parodies, comedic shorts, and original skits poking fun at campus life and popular culture. Everything from Greek life to freshman year and famous UCLA traditions like the Undie Run is explored as Company brings the funny to the stage. At the end of the show, honors for best duet, solo, group and other categories are awarded.Tickets are on sale now at Central Ticketing Office windows outside of the James West Alumni Center. UCLA Alumni Association members, alumni and the general public may purchase tickets in person or by calling 310-UCLA-101. This event takes place Friday, May 2 at 8 p.m. at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. -- Kimberley Wong
Farmers Market Bars
6333 W. Third St.
If you’re ever in town for an L.A. weekend and looking for some musical entertainment, head down to the Fairfax District on Third and Fairfax. Every Wednesday through Saturday, EB’s Bar hosts Karaoke Hoedown, Thursday Night Jazz, Friday Night Music Scene, and Saturday Night Home Grown Series on their West Patio. Feel a little classy as you sip house wine or an imported beer, all while enjoying the local flavor of musicians from around the area. Or, head down over to 326: You’ll still enjoy the local music from this spot, but since the bar is known for serving domestic beer and wine, you can listen to the live music while chugging your favorite brew. Best of all, though the alcohol might cost you, the music is free. -- Michelle Castillo
