Amoeba Hollywood is the single largest music store in California, carrying almost anything a true music lover could ever want. From old-school rock, country, rap and hip-hop, this one-stop shop caters to every genre imaginable. Collectors will also find classic vinyl records, CDs, DVDs and music posters of their favorite bands. Although new CDs run around the same price as traditional music outlets, the used and clearance section of the store often offers the same CDs at highly reduced costs. Many music buffs find themselves hooked when they learn that Amoeba occasionally hosts small, free concerts, truly making this music store one of a kind. -- Vanessa Frigillana


McCabe's Guitar Shop

McCabe’s Guitar Shop may be one of the oldest guitar shops in Los Angeles, but you’ll find out that this place still retains that special magic you feel whenever you walk into a music store. Guitars and banjoes line the walls of this landmark shop -- a stringed-instrument playground for those whose fingers are in tune with the music. But, if you find that you yourself might not be musically inclined, you can always catch a live performance at McCabe’s. UCLA students frequent the Buffalo Exchange in Westwood Village for good reason: Whether searching for the perfect outfit or simply browsing the many racks of new and secondhand clothing, the lower-than-retail prices and unique finds offered at this store can be a steal. Prices are student-friendly, ranging around $10 to $25. Unlike downtown thrift stores, the selective purchasing and close proximity to campus makes Buffalo Exchange a Westwood treasure. The Buy-Trade-Sell policy is an easy option for students looking for clothes at an affordable rate. About half a mile north from Wilshire Boulebard, this three-floor camera shop may seem bland to the eye from the outside; however, once you enter Samy’s Camera you’ll find yourself fascinated by everything. The shop is staffed with highly knowledgeable camera technicians who can help you find your inner shutterbug. From cameras for snap-happy tourists to cameras for paparazzi celebrity stalkers, you’ll find a device for every skill level at reasonable prices - perfect for capturing your moments around town. As an added bonus, this Samy’s branch of the retail chain features art photography on the walls, as well as a plethora of photography books to peruse at your leisure, making this store a mini-museum for photographic art. - Michelle Castillo

A clothing boutique and small art gallery rolled into one, Black Market sells exclusive items catered to the Los Angeles scene. You’ll find almost everything in this store a must for your clothing collection, especially when it comes down to the accessories. Although quite pricy for the average budget, knowing that you’ll be the only one on the street with that quirky shirt makes shelling out the dough worth it. However, for those in-the-know and have a little patience, the sales racks in the back are what makes shopping at Black Market a real treat - if you look hard enough, you’ll find amazing, unique clothing practically for free. - Michelle Castillo

Vintage and thrift store shopping without the pretentious attitude, Thank You Mart sells an odd collection of clothing, jewelry and accessories - all for $3.99 an item. If you have time, dig through the racks and shelves - you’ll find yourself the owner of one-of-a-kind items that celebrities shell out thousands for, but you’ll only pay the change in your pockets.
