The University of Wisconsin Bands Venues Stores Eat & Drink Around Town

Town profile video player

Nestled in the heart of the Midwest dairy country, Madison is a cultural oasis in an often ignored state. The city, population 200,000-plus, includes the sizable University of Wisconsin-Madison campus and the trendy State Street commercial district, which traces a path from the heart of campus to the State Capitol. Along State, the Cesar Pelli-designed Overture Center hosts some of the grandest acts in the Midwest, and the dozens of bars and music clubs in and around campus attract many of today’s up-and-coming bands. The campus also boasts attractive venues like the historic Orpheum Theater, which doubles as a spot for independent films and a concert venue for indie rockers. The city supports diverse restaurants, shops and more than the average number of local coffeehouses, but above all, Madison is a vibrant and young scene worth exploring. -Emma Condon

Music Spotlight: My Morning Jacket's 'Evil Urges'
