Exclusive Company
508 State St.
The Exclusive Company has one of Madison’s most extensive stocks of CDs, DVDs, posters, music paraphernalia and a helpful, heavily pierced staff. But what really defines the shop is its split personalities.
An unabashed vibe of Satan-worship greets you as you walk through the door. Walls lined with posters of bands like Lamb of God and Avenged Sevenfold indicate this isn’t a place youthful customers would likely bump into their Physics professor.
Yet down in the basement you’ll see a different, less-visible Exclusive Company. Here you’ll find Bach and Coltrane, as well as a staff better suited for sitting down to tea and biscuits. It’s an experience not to be missed in Madison. -- Owen Rosenberg
EarWax Punk and Metal
254 W. Gilman Tuesday - Saturday 11 a.m. - 7 p.m. Sunday 12 p.m. - 5 p.m.
You would be more than fortunate to find a collection of punk, metal and experimental recordings and memorabilia as comprehensive or affordable as what EarWax Punk and Metal has to offer. The shop has seemingly everything: obscure CDs, DVDs and vinyl, T-shirts, hats, stickers, pins, magazines, flags, patches, you name it. EarWax’s employees are all helpful and approachable, meaning you can even pick up a totally whack Bullet for My Valentine CD and not get made fun of or spat on -- they’re that nice. -- Mario Puig
Strictly Discs
1900 Monroe Street
Monday - Friday 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. Saturday 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Sunday 11 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Located in-between the University of Wisconsin and Edgewood College campuses, Strictly Discs offers a wide selection of new and used CDs in addition to a retro-spirited assortment of vinyl records. The store has built up a substantial amount of customer loyalty in its 20 years of business -- perhaps in part due to occasional customer-appreciation store events, which offer discounts on music, refreshments and tequila shots. -- Ben Peterson
B-Side Records
436 State St. Monday - Friday 10 a.m. - 9 p.m. Saturday 10 a.m. - 7 p.m. Sunday 12 p.m. - 6 p.m.
With a self-professed focus on "music of lasting value" and a bent towards connoisseurs, B-Side Records maintains one of the best selections in the area. In practical terms, the store's mission statement translates to a deep cache of non-mainstream albums spanning the history of rock, jazz and other genres, as well as a diverse selection of today's indie releases. B-Side's target market will find a surprisingly high number of desirable items within the store's modest dimensions, conveniently located on Madison's main downtown commercial drag, State Street. -- Matt Hunziker
