Around Town
Saddle Creek Road

When Jason Kulbel and Mike Mogis realized the name Lumberjack Records was already taken, a new identity had to be found for their up-and-coming record label set to release music by the likes of Conor Oberst (Bright Eyes), Tim Kasher (Cursive, The Good Life) and other locals. Saddle Creek Road ran through the heart of midtown near where many among that group grew up and seemed like a good fit for the label name that went on to define the "Omaha sound." Over the past decade Saddle Creek Records has seen its name throughout the pages of magazines far and wide and continues to gain recognition with its ever-expanding roster of talent. Elsewhere, Happy Hollow, another road that runs through the same area of town, is another Omaha landmark that is also the name of Cursive's latest album.

Omaha Entertainment Awards

This past January saw downtown's Holland Center hosting the second annual Omaha Entertainment Awards, a ceremony designed to bring the arts community as a whole together for an evening to celebrate the city's best in show. Music is combined with theater for this extravaganza, which, in mimicking a ceremony like the Grammys or the Oscars, features local celebrity hosts and several categories in which local performers can receive awards. The awards committee is still trying to work out the kinks of making the ceremony a smooth process from beginning to end, but the next year or two should give the OEAs plenty of time to become a bona fide Omaha arts fixture. -- Jeremy Buckley
