The 49er
4824 Dodge St.
The 49er is a midtown bar that occasionally hosts live music, but usually it serves as a neighborhood hangout where people meet before or after shows to prime up or have a nightcap. Table space is a hot commodity, as the bar is on the smaller side, and its central location on Dodge Street makes it an easy place to meet friends from both the east and west side of town. The free wireless Internet doesn't hurt the bar's popularity, either, though the constant cloud of cigarette smoke might be a turnoff to the more health-conscious drinkers of Omaha.
Brothers Lounge
3812 Farnam St.
Not to be confused with the chain of bars with the same name based out of Wisconsin, Brothers places ads in the weekly local entertainment magazines promoting its jukebox selections. Sticking with an old-school style of jukebox rather than the modernized Touch Tunes variety, local music and punk rock are mainstay CDs in the Brothers music provider. About once a month Brothers hosts a live music event, but only for the hippest of the hip, as the owners are more interested in catering to friends and loyal customers than the masses. This is not a bad thing. -- Jeremy Buckley
