The City of Brotherly Love, home of the Philly Soul sound, boasts such greats as John Coltrane, Billie Holiday, Patti LaBelle, and Hall and Oates. Later, musicians such as The Roots, Jedi Mind Tricks, DJ Jazzy Jeff, Eve, Freeway, and Cassidy began to emerge. From that cultural boom, G. Love and Special Sauce, the Disco Biscuits and Paint it Black have also surfaced.

As the diversity of sounds grew, so did the variety of music venues. From coffee shops, bars and restaurants to house basements and stadiums, Philadelphia has a spot for all varieties of artists and music fans. Open-mic nights can be found on any night of the week and now, the city is now home to everything from punk and the blues, to classical to hip-hop. -Ashley Bradley
