The Marvelous
208 S. 40 St. Monday – Thursday 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. Friday – Saturday: 10 a.m. – 10 p.m. Sunday: 12 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Tucked into a basement among a row of restaurants and shops on the western fringe of the University of Pennsylvania’s campus, The Marvelous is underground in both senses of the word. The store’s main business is in used vinyl and CDs, with a selection that includes indie, punk, ‘80s pop, reggae, jazz and country, all between $2 and $20. The Marvelous also houses a smaller section of new indie and electronic CDs at $14. In addition to music, the shop sells comic books and instrument supplies and holds in-store guitar, bass, and violin lessons. – Frances Wright
Repo Records
538 South St. Monday – Thursday, Sunday: 12 p.m. – 9 p.m. Friday – Saturday: 11 a.m. – 11 p.m.
In the historic South Street district, Repo Records sits beside Retrospect, one of the premier vintage clothing stores in the city. With a large collection of domestic and imported vinyls and CDs, ranging in genre from punk and indie to electronic and dance, Repo Records stands out among Philadelphia record shops. While at first the shop seems rather small, the vast selection of music, from the ground floor to the basement, will keep you there for hours. The super-friendly staff is always willing to make a recommendation or order music you can’t find in the store. – Ashley Bradley
