The University of Pennsylvania Bands Venues Stores Eat & Drink Around Town
Venues
The First Unitarian Church
2124 Chestnut St.

The best place to see live music in Philadelphia is also the best place to ... pray? Since the mid-1990s, Philadelphia-based R5 Productions has been renting out the First Unitarian Church (known simply as “the Church” to most concert-goers) at night to host shows by the best of punk and indie bands in both the church’s basement and the intimate upstairs sanctuary. Recent shows have included Girl Talk and the Mountain Goats, and the latest blogosphere darlings are guaranteed to play here on their way through Philly. All ages, all the time, the Church truly makes for a unique show-going experience. – Grace Ambrose

Johnny Brenda’s
1201 N. Frankford Ave.
Monday – Sunday 11 a.m. – 1:00 a.m.

Although Johnny Brenda’s still has the same décor it had in the ‘60s, its clientele is decidedly young, urban and hip. Concert-goers can sip on the best local brews while enjoying indie, electronic, experimental or folk acts from the floor or the balcony, and afterwards, they can snack on sandwich plates made with fresh local ingredients at the downstairs restaurant. The quality, atmosphere and reasonable prices (shows range from $5 to $20 and drinks are around $4) make Johnny Brenda’s a must for those over 21. – Frances Wright

Trocadero Theatre
1003 Arch St.

Located in Philly’s Chinatown, “The Troc” is an intimate setting where you’re likely to catch indie bands about to hit it big. Recent performers at the all-ages venue include Explosions in the Sky, Saul Williams and Kate Nash. Additionally, a movie night goes down every Monday for fans 21 and over at only $3 for a ticket and a snack. Seldom are concert tickets priced above $15, so with the money you save, treat your date to a nice Chinatown dinner after the show. – Ben Rosen

Chris’ Jazz Café
1421 Sansom St.

Chris' Jazz Café has the air of a stereotypical jazz club: dark, subdued, not a sound but those emanating from the stage in the back corner of the room. But on the night of a big show, the Café buzzes with life. And the packed house is nothing new to Chris': Rated "Best Jazz Club" of 2007 by Philadelphia magazine, the cafe regularly fills to capacity on Saturday nights. With seating arranged in front of and around the stage, Chris' allows listeners to be right up with the band. The cafe creates a supremely relaxed environment in which listeners can order dinner, desserts, and a wide selection of drinks while enjoying the great music. – Max Hass
